DESCRIPTION
WADERS AT HIGH TIDE WADDEN SEA I is a fine art print from the WADDEN collection.
The image was made on the Wadden Sea island of Ameland. At high tide, wading birds gather off the coast on sandbanks that remain dry, so-called high tide roosts. Depicted are oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) in the foreground, directly behind are bar-tailed godwits (Limosa lapponica) and Eurasian curlews (Numenius arquata) and in the distance common shelducks (Tadorna tadorna) and some great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) and black-backed gulls.
By photographing with a long shutter speed, one to two seconds, walking oystercatchers appear blurred.
The Wadden Sea is a large coastal wetland environment and consists of the largest unbroken intertidal sand and mud flats in the world. This unique ecosystem is crucial for waders as they migrate from their breeding grounds in the north to their wintering grounds in the south. It is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage.
